"I have a MD5A in my Westerly GK24. It started overheating recently and finding that it did not overheat when ran without the thermostat in place i replaced the thermostat, however again it overheated! I took out the thermostat and no problems!! What can i do?

Also where can i check the oil in the gearbox, how often should that be changed?"

"That brings me back to old times late 70's when I sailed one from Gothenburg to Norway and back on holiday.
You probably have a water restriction somewhere. Take down and clean manifold and exhaust outlet, the outlet might be restricted. If 'steaming' out the exhaust at higher rpm that is normally an indication.
Oil change normally after every season when boat is up. Both engine and drive."

If there was a water restriction would it not still overheat when the thermostat is out? What is the risks of running without the thermostat?

"Installing the thermostat red

"Installing the thermostat reduces the flow even more. 30 yrs old raw water cooled engine, probably time to really do a cleaning job in the cooling system. Take out the drain plug from cylinder and back-flush with a garden hose.BUT: DO NOT FILL UP EXHAUST! If doing at sea, let the engine run normally while flushing, then the exhaust will blow out the water from the system. If doing at dry storage, remove impeller and run engine."
