"Hi, Im hew here and have the following thing going on.
I have a Glastron boat with a 1977 Mercruiser 888 ford 302 that holds prox. 6 quarts of oil according to my manual (and also other sources)
When I completely drain the engine,(let it drip out over night) change the (pre filled) oil filter and put new oil in, let it run short, then at some 3 quarts of oil the dipstick reeds max. I now have some 4+ quart in there and the stick reeds 3/4inch above max. I do not think that 3 quarts is enough as the manual says the double.
The engine runs great and the oil pressure reeds ~35 at idle and ~70 at 1500 rpm and up.
One says that the 6 quart is an aprox. cappasity and I should fill up to max. on the stick, an other says the stick is off and I should fill 6 quarts as the manual says so.
The dipstick is all original MCM also the tube and oil pan.
I do not want to overfill to precouse oil foaming and on the otherhand what if the level is in between min and max. then it would be like 2.5 quarts and that can not be right as the oil also needs some amount to cool.
Tomorrow Im going to drain out the oil again and be sure (again) that the sump is complete empty, refill with 5 quart and see what the stick says.
Some one with an 888 might know how much oil he uses.
Thank in adv.

The engine is probably not original but the oil pan and dipstick are; the mismatch would make the difference.

"Thanks, but what would cause the difference?
The pan is original and so is the dipstick, it has the stick tube mounted on the starboard side in the pan (original) and there is the oil in, I dont see what a non original engine has to do in this case. The engine holds no oil it just drains back in to the sump. In theory I can take the pan from the engine and still read the oil level on the dipstick, well.. I wish I could so I could put 6 quarts of oil in the pan and see why the stick reads way overfilled.

I have an 1987 pan and dipstic

I have an 1987 pan and dipstick w/a 1996 reman longblock and the oil on the stick shows above the full line w/4 qts. My old 4.3L truck engine held 4-1/2 qts when full. Thats why I stated the difference. My friend has a 350 w/the same issue. He bought 3 different dipsticks and none show the right oil level.
