"Merry Christmas! 1967 2.5L 120HP MC-1. I am assembling the lower gear house this week and came across something I missed.
The original gear set (# of teeth) is 14/28 Mercruiser I and the replacement gear set is 17/28 Mercruiser 1a, 1b, 1c. Both sets are listed for the 120. The initial mock up appears to have everything fitting as it should. The shimming a little different.
What am I up against. Will the 17/28 tooth gear set work or have I jouryed down a dark and lonely path?
Regards,
TxGalz Dah"

"You want the 2:1 ratio gear set. The 'new' set is the 1.65:1 set and will make you engine work harder than it used to. Going the other way won't hurt the engine but will usually cost you top end speed.

Unless your 'project' is very light weight, I'd be inclined to get the correct gear set unless you plan to operate slowly all the time."

"I checked with the shop I bought the gear set through. Since I have all ready pressed the gears they declined to take them back.
Guess I will break the boat in with the newer set and start saving my money to upgrade next winter. Any idea where to find the 1.98:1 gears?
Thanks for the update. This one really got by me.

TxGalz Dah."
