Maxxum 55 stops when handle is tilted

I've had this motor for a long time. Last year I bought a new boat that didn't have any wood on the outside of the transom for the motors to "bite" into when you clamp them on. I had the motor turned to a hard 90 and cranked the throttle and the motor basically came off the transom. I was able to turn it off and clamp it back on but now when I turn it on I need to lift the handle up to get it to work, as soon as I lower the tiller it turns off.
I took the cover off hoping to see some sort of contact or something but no luck.
I'm assuming the problem is the throttle assembly itself and I need to get a whole new handle assembly (Part number 2774002) if I can find one?
Has anyone had this problem and found a way to fix it?
Thanks

Well I don't feel too bad. Scrolling down this group I see there's a lotta posts that no one replies to.
In the meantime I bought a new motor.
