does anyone know how to set the max spark advance on a 1992 115 evinrude TLEND? I don't have a test prop and was wondering if there was a way to do it without running the motor at WOT. Need help

The full spark advance can be adjusted without have the engine running at near full throttle as follows.

To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary).

Rig a spark tester and have the gap set to 7/16". Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire. Crank the engine over and set the spark advance to 4° less than what the engine calls for.

I don't know the full spark advance setting your engine calls for, but to pick a figure, say your engine calls for 28°, set the timing at 24°. The reasoning for the 4° difference is that when the engine is actually running, due to the nature of the solid state ignition componets, the engine gains the extra 4°.

If you set the engine to its true setting at cranking speed, when running it will advance beyond its limit by 4° which will set up pre-ignition causing guaranteed piston damage! You don't want that to take place.

No need to be concerned about the idle timing as that will take care of itself. The main concern is the full advance setting.

Be sure to use your own engines spark advance settings, not the one I picked out of the air here in my notes.
 
didn't notice there was part of it missing. I think you have to disconnect the quickstart by seperating the white/black wire to the port? temp sensor& grounding the side coming out of the pp to a good engine ground before cranking.
 
can' remember if that's all, & can't find copy of joe's latest on quickstart disconnect. maybe someone else can. I'll look for copy of disc. instruc.'s in am.
 
found it !! /disconnect the white/black wire that runs from the port temp sensor to the pack. There is a bullet connector for that purpose. Ground the PACK side of that white/black wire. This fools the pack into thinking that the engine temp is over 95 degrees.

Locate the yellow/red wire at the starter solenoid. It will be connected at one of the two small terminals. One side of that wire runs back down the boat harness to the key switch. The other yellow/red wire will run up the engine harness to the pack.
You want to disconnect the wire that goes to the pack, but leave the wire that comes from the key switch connected.
You can also lift the pack up, and pull apart the bullet connector for the yellow/red wire. This does the same thing as disconnecting it at the starter solenoid.

QuickStart disabled.
 
Thanks for that info. My motor doesn't have "quick start" and the timer base is only able to move when you advance the throtle. The roller that's in the cam slot doesn't allow the timer base to be moved. There isn't a rubber stop or stop screw that I can find. The roller wasw worn out so I made another one. There was a lot of slop with the old roller. Runs better with new roller but I don't know where the timimg is for max spark advance at WOT. Need advice.
 
wot stop will be on the starboard side (right) facing engine from rear of boat.all evinrudes I've seen have a wot stop under the flywheel on the strbd side & idle stop on the port side If it has a timing base, it has to have the two stops to set the timing. they are both under the flywheel, & you adjust the screws from the side front of the motor. I think the roller you refer to is the throttle cam roller , right? doesn't have anything to do with the timing sensor adjustment.To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the THROTTLE AT FULL, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary).
 
Just disconnect the shift cable on engine and put throttle in full.
Then make a 'by-pass' for the start.
One push-button with leads and ring terminals.
One lead on the small terminal that has the yellow/red the other one on the big where battery cable comes in.(Starter solenoid)
With remote in full forward you will not be able to operate the start circuit from key.
Remember to put ign ON and attach the emergency stop in place before cranking.
Do not forget to remove the spark plugs and either use a spark tester or keep the plugs connected but grounded well off the plug holes!!!!! Plug leads must not be open or directly grounded.
 
I'm unable to move the timer base with the cam roller in the cam slot. I found the WOT stop but there isn't a stop, that I can find, for the timer base. I'm I missing something?
 
The timing is adjusted with a thum wheel on a rod that's connected to the timer base. Once it's adjusted, it locks in place with a locknut.
 
Maximum timing is up against a stop!------------It should not need adjusting at all-----------Unless you want to retard it for poor quality fuel in your area

NOTE: If your engine has the "Fast Start" feature", you must disconnect/eliminate that feature in order to use the following method. The "Fast Start" automatically advances the spark electronically when the engine first starts, dropping it to normal when the engine reaches a certain temperture.

It's a good idea to ground the other plug wires to avoid sparks that could ignite fuel that may shoot out of the plug holes. I've personally never grounded them out and have never encountered a problem (fire) but it could happen.

I'm I missing something? I can't find it in the maintenance manual either. Is it known by another name? Is it the roller that's in the cam slot?
