Max RPM on AQ190

I have a 1967 V20 wellcraft th

I have a 1967 V20 wellcraft that is powered with a Ford 302 (AQ190) and has a volvo penta 280 outdrive. It currently has a 14 inch 19 ptich propeller. With wide open throtle it will rev up to 3500 RPM's and will go about 30 MPH. I tried a 14 inch prop with a 15 pitch and the RPM on wide open throttle increased to about 4400. My question is which is the max RPM's this engine should be generating so that I can prop it accordingly and which is the most fuel efficient RPM range for this engine.

The best RPM depend on the type of hull. On a 22.5 boat I tested about 3-4 years ago, the most economical range was 3200-3400 RPM on the AQ240 (351 Ford). I would expect the range to be similar for the 302."
