i have read, and assume the S stands for short shaft. And the M stands for manual start(Rope).
Please tell me what year, is it a yamaha built?

"Sometimes both. If it's made of a less noble metal (zinc or magnesium etc) it will work as an anode.

And yes, it can be (set) to offset the torque created by the prop to help the boat track straight.

So on flat water, on a windlass day if you notice that your bow tends to veer say a little to the right, you can move that fin a little to the left to try and get her to track properly.

Sometimes there will be little tic marks or even numbers printed in the disk directly across from the fin and a corresponding marker on the bottom of the housing to allow you to "mark" the correct spot for proper placement after removal.

Mostly it's a trial and error kinda set-up. Obviously, the higher horsepower of the motor the more torque and hence, the greater need to fiddle to find the right spot."

gave a elect.trolling motor and 100 bucks.I kow several people that saw it run,but said it starved at WOT. The guy said he had been in the fuel pump,so i just ordered a new one.The motor looks as if it sat more than it ran..clean. Have not ran a compression check, but head looks great.No heat distorsion at all..Thanx again Graham, from what ive read, and your fast answers, your well versed on these motors.

The engine I have has no seria

The engine I have has no serial number label on the mounting bracket.
The cover has Mariner graphics and 40HP sticker. The engine is stamped with 6E900 and has a small silver plate stamped with 080018 (serial no.?)
Can anyone tell me the model year from this?
Is there any way of confirming it is 40HP?

The 6E9 if stamped on the engine would definately confirm it's a 40 horse.

But the 080018 is not part of the serial number.

There might be another tag somewhere on the engine with the 6E9-xxxxxx."

Thanks for this information, i've found 6e9 in a few places so far but no other serial number.
One or two parts have Yamaha symbols on them so your spot on there, thank you.

I've attached a couple of photos (one of the disc i thought was the serial number) any suggestions?

There were 3 versions of the 40 Mariner that started 6E9. A twin carb model, a twin carb with auto-blend and a twin carb with (real) oil injection."

Please help with the model/year of two Mariner outboard engines. 40hp. serial numbers 890-821358-01 and the other 890-821358-C1 (two stroke motors)
