"I have 1991 Mariner 100 HP, just bought the boat and wanted to make sure everything was good on the cooling side. No problem with the water pump kit but I find out now I should have put the motor in forward gear before dropping the lower unit, I left it in neutral. My question is should I do anything special to put it back together? The control is in neutral but I am not sure about the small shift spline. I cleaned everything up real well so I easily coulh have turned it,. Any adivice appreciated!"

"John if the prop turns freely both ways it's still in neutral,if not get a vice grips and shift it back into neutral or if you prefer, into fwd and put the shift control into fwd."

I've come to the conclusio

I've come to the conclusion that putting the LU back on in neutral is the only way to go. Seems to work much better in about every case. Put both the shifter and LU in neutral and stab it back together.

"I would normally agree with you Jeff, who am I to disagree with an experienced tech,But, there's always a but,I had to replace my lwr unit and only in fwd would she go in,and believe me I tried neutral as the previous unit slipped in no problem in neutral"

"Just my two cents worth guys

"Just my two cents worth guys if your gearshift cable is adjusted correctly it is easyier to get the lower unit back on in neautral, however if its out the lower spline in the gearbox turns half a spline and then its hard to get back on.

I have found in forward gear the lower spline can move which is a pain when your trying to lift a v6 box"

"I have a 1983 Mercury 70hp that I found out, now needs an impeller. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to install one of these and what would a dealer charge me for it, if I had to take it in?
Chris"

"Chris, not difficult to change, but wouldn't do it without at least a Seloc's manual.

An impeller and the seals will run about 30 bucks and a shop would want an hours labour.

So can do it yourself for maybe 65 including the manual or 100-150 at a shop."

"Based upon the responses I recieved I decided to experiment. I installed the lower unit in neutral and in forward. I must say, it was difficult to get it to seat in properly in forward. Neutral went right in. I bolted it down in the neutral position and everything worked fine, pumps good and goes into the right gear so in the future I will leave it in neutral. I also suggest the Clymer manual. I first bought a Seloc and it was not correct, only general info. The Clymer is right on.

Thanks for the help."
