Mariner W15 662-S-001361

Good morning. I just registered with this forum in order to get some information about my 15hp Mariner. My search has come up with some conflicting information found in several after market repair manuals. I Googled my motor model & serial number and found various parts diagrams for it. According to several sources, Mariner didn't keep a detailed serial number reference by year, but changed the model number when an update was made to the motor. If this is not true, can anyone identify the exact year of my motor? Seems like it's somewhere between 1977 and 1987. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance.

That is true and not true of Mariners (the part about "some" not having a "year" tied to a specific motor).

There are two very distinct/different Mariner models out there.

Some are simply a Mercury (same model/year/mechanical/parts etc) - the "only" difference is the paint colour and the decals.

Then their are Mariners such as yours that were built by Yamaha for Merc to be sold as Mariners. With these Mariners there are 100% Yamaha - not a stitch of Merc in them. They were carbon copies of earlier Yamaha models that were either no longer in production (in many cases) or were produced after the Yamaha model had been on the market for a few years.

These were built to compete with other less expensive options on the market, particularly targeted to the Asian markets. I'm not saying they were poorly built, they just weren't cutting edge technology that you would find in a Merc model sold as the same model year.

Anyhow the W15 662-S-001361 provides a bunch of information on your Yami/Mariner.

W - this was a "work" model (called a commercial model by some other mfg's) bare bones model (rope start, no charge/lighting coils etc)

15 - horsepower

662 - the Yamaha code indicating it was an exact clone of a 1974 Enduro Model 15 A Yamaha outboard (mechanically identical in every respect)

S - short shaft model meant for a 15" transom

001361 - is the actual "serial" indicating it was built in 1974

Yamaha continued to build this model until about midway through 1978 and then it discontinued in favour of a newer/different 15 horse Yami/Mariner.

I can not find any parts support or even parts lists anymore for this model with Merc - it's plain "too old".

I don't know exactly when Yamaha discontinued this model but since by mid 78 they were producing something different for Merc I would assume they had scrapped this model as well - perhaps an email to Yamaha asking about parts for a 1974 Yamaha Enduro 15 A might give you a lead if you need parts.

If it's running I would use it. If it isn't and you can't fix it with something as simple as a new set of plugs etc I would not put too many dollars into it. This model really has been orphaned and you would "probably" be better off going with something that was a little more prolific. What I mean is, you can find parts and support for say a 1974 Johnson or Evinrude 15 horse - a Yami built Mariner or even a 15 horse Merc of that age, maybe not so much.

Graham,
Thank you for all this information! I was hoping someone would be able to find the exact year. This motor is in excellent condition and runs great. It obviously had little use. I'm curious as to how much information you have on these Yamaha built Mariners. Is this data available to the general public anywhere? I collect old outboards and this one is my newest. Thanks much!

If you are talking about the break down I provided, that is open source stuff. Can't tell you where I originally got it from now - it's been years and my memory of the source is long faded.

Using Google, and doing some "sifting through the chaff" can provide with lots of information on older outboards.

From a Mechanical point of view again, you would have to do some digging. The second party manuals (Seloc's etc) did not pick up the Mariner line until 1977 or 78. So your best bet would trying to find an original service manual for the Yamaha Enduro.

Again, I don't have a date range covering when the Enduro was built by Yami - that single piece of info I have is that it was built in 1974 - so at least one model year and that they continued to built that design, as a Mariner until mid 78 (Merc has introduced a redesigned model part way through the year on a couple of occasions, so that's not totally unheard of, with other occurrences in 85 and 94).
