"I just found out that the thermostat had been removed from my 1986 30hp mariner...The fellow it came from stated he takes them out of all the motors he gets...uh..ok.He claims they are only need in the northern states, where its cold..I do understand a cooler motor creates less wear/friction, but does the motor need to operate at a certian temp. for best performance?
I hate he threw it away, but i think i will spend the 40 bucks and get a replacement.."

"Earlier OBs never had a t-stat, but they were designed to run that way. A 2 stroke has GOT to run better at a controlled temperature. I'd put it back in.

"Most outboards like to operate in the 130-150 degree range, so unless you are running in water that has a temperature of about 110 degrees you need a thermostat for best performance.

That would make any place other than a swimming pool directly at the equator a "northern state"."
