I have a 88 20hp Mariner that won't run well in gear. I have replaced the fuel line/bulb-the strainer always seems to be full. I can take off the cover and rev it up in neutral and it will rev like crazy-but when in gear it just bogs out. Could the choke be staying on? It usually drives out of the problem after about ten minutes. Also-neutral is a no load condition-so I am wondering if the diaphragm on the side of the carb(fuel pump) could be at fault. The condition just seems to be getting worse.

"brian,
i have a mariner 20 with the same problem, i too am trying to get info on it. this is what i know, I have rebuilt the carb, no help, checked the compression: both cylinders at 120 (normal) replaced the spark plugs, no help, new gas tank, fuel lines, bulb, connections and so forth, right now, i am thinking the stator has had it. if you get any info pass it on. my e-mail is [email protected]"

Check the thermostat. The engine may not be heating up fast enough. I doubt the stator has anything to do with the problem. If you do much trolling at slow speed the exuast could be getting blocked under the power head from to rich of fuel / fuel not burning clean enough. Carbon build up slowly closing the exuast port.
Just a few thoughts. Good luck.
