"I have a 30 HP mariner outboa

"I have a 30 HP mariner outboard,30 E 689 S 107350 and I think it is an 1985 year model. The impeller keeps gong out. Any suggestions on why it keeps eating impellers? I am going to try and replace the impeller myself. Does anyone have a diagram on the process or suggestions on a repair manual that will show the process?

"Are you one of those people who dry fire their engine, to see "if it's running okay"? I see people doing that all the time. Not good!

You can buy manual from this site that will walk you through the procedure. That, tools and patience, is all you need.

"Remove lower gearcase, drive

"Remove lower gearcase, drive shaft will [should] come out too. Waterpump is attached to lower gearcase assembly. Open pump and check for wear in the pump case walls. replace with decent quality impellor if all looks smooth. Simple.

Take time and note each step for removal, assembly is exact reverse of stripping. Good idea to have a pair of experienced eyes on hand, they'll be able to fetch the brandy once the job is completed.

One last thing, make sure the impellor fins are in same direction when you install as what old one came out. Also, carefully align water uptake tube upon re-assembly. Looking from the top of the shaft, down to the gearcase, driveshaft turns clockwise, fins to follow that natural twist.

Test motor on the hose and as Jeff said: DON'T RUN HER DRY!!!!

Lastly, avoid the shallow muddy stuff. Tends to chew everthing up badly...
