"Mariner 60 hsp motor (year unk; likley 20+ old) fired up after 2 years in storage. Runs smooth and strong but no tell tale. Shut it down within 1 minute to prevent damage. SN 304866 (last digit 8?). Like to know how this is supposed to work, and what might need doing.

Also, how to unlock so I can tilt motor to trailering position? Looks like rusty pistons attached to both sides of shaft.

"Your motor is probably a 1979. It's a model that was built by Yamaha, for Mercury and was made to Merc specs.

After 2 years in storage it could have a few issues that need addressing. You note that it has no tell-tale.

That indicates that the impeller probably needs changing and maybe gaskets and seals in the waterpump as well.

The motor should have a good go over though in any case. Check the compression, check the spark. Inspect all wires, hoses and seals for serviceability. Clean the carb and rebuild if necessary.

That's what "should" be done. The motor can be damaged and turned into junk by not taking the time to re-prep it for use.

To get it to tilt, try shifting it into forward gear (without it running) - that should release it for you...."
