Hi My Mariner 15 hp 2 stroke is a great runner always starts first pull however recently
I have noticed that it backfires now and again randomly at low revs.
Once just beyond low revs no problem. Secondly when opened up to full throttle
it runs perfectly for about 500m then loses power.
If I go back to lower revs and open up again its back to full power
for a short distance then does the same. Its roughly a 2006 model.
Any ideas? Thank you MartinB

Try opening up the low speed mixture needle 1/4 turn.-----Have someone squeeze the primer bulb ( manual fuel pump ) and see what happens at full throttle.

Thank you I will give that a try next time I am out. I assume that you think the mixture may be too lean at low reves and perhaps being starved of fuel at high.Is the low speed mixture needle easily accesable ie
do I have to open anything up. Thanks Martin

If that's similar to the 1990 model I was working on, there's a black plastic plug in the shroud bolted to the carb that has to be removed. The idle mixture screw is located behind it.
