Mariner Issues

"Hi everyone,

I've Been

"Hi everyone,

I've Been reading posts on this forum so I thought I'd join and see if I could get some help. I recieved an older Starcraft with a 1993 40HP Merc on her which ran for three outings then died. While I was trying to figure out the problem, a friend gave me a 1984 75 Mariner and said if I can get it running it'd be $500 for the engine. I thought great deal and more HP since my boat is rated for a 85 HP engine. So 1 week later and reading my Seloc bible I finally got her in the water for her first test, which came to a miserable end. I think I have a lower end issue due to some loud clunks upon shifting but it's the lack of power that concerns me. I did a compression test and from cylinders 1 to 4 had 150, 150, 152 and 155. When I put it in gear it runs up to 2000 rpm then starts to fall off and then dies. I've read on here about the carbs, stator and or ignition problems. I'm not sure what to do next, I'm thinking carb rebuild?? Are these old engines worth fixing up? The older style outboards really appeal to me but I don't have a money tree as of yet so where do I draw the line and say enough is enough? I run tugs for a living but this is my first pleasure boat so I'm fumbling my way through this and any advice would be greatly appreciated."

"Hi, I have purchased a boat with a 225 3.0L Mariner outboard engine.

I need to know the top RPM, Idle speed & oil pressure?

The oil is not mixed in th e gas but pulled from a seperate tank.

Thanks"

"Hi Herwald,

I guess I shou

"Hi Herwald,

I guess I should of picked a less general title my post but let's hope we both get help with our Mariner Issues. What year is your engine? I have the Seloc Service manual and might be able to look it up for you if it's an older model."

"Arron, remove and clean the c

"Arron, remove and clean the carbs, on a 2 cycle, it will run on half the cyls and sound good. The other half are not getting gas, which also mean no OIL. Certain death. Its normal for it to clunk in gear."

"Hey JB,

Just ordered the c

"Hey JB,

Just ordered the carb kits for it, $111 each and am going to start on it tomorrow. As for the lower end I'm going to take it apart, and probally have to replace the impellor? Also I guess I need the check the continuity in the stator wires? First things first, carbs then I'll post up how that worked out. Thanks for the info."

"I'm new to this board, so

"I'm new to this board, so if i'm doing something wrong just slap up the back of my head and send me in the right direction. I have a question about tilt and trim on a 1982 70 hp Mercury. Will the T/T work on any other 3 cyl mercury and if so how do I find out what will work?
Thanks
Ed"

"So here's where I'm

"So here's where I'm at. Went to my friend's place and he went over everything I had done so far. Helped me set up the throttle and gear cables, then we put the boat in the water. Started fine, shifts good, but ran into the same problem of bogging and no power. Brought the boat back and concluded that cylinders 3 & 4 aren't firing. I made the mistake of assuming I had spark since the boat started and ran. Just got my 40 Merc back and found out the brain box's are interchangable, hope the stator and trigger coil are too. The dead cylinders were wet so does that mean I can rule out lower crank seal??"

"Aaron,If your "dead"

"Aaron,If your "dead" cyls were wet then I think it would be safe to assume that they are not getting spark.
Start at the plugs and work your way back to the motor. Not being familiar with this motor that's all I can think of."

"Hey Noel,

ya I've been

"Hey Noel,

ya I've been at it all morning. Found a rotten wire that goes from the switch box to the secondary coils. I have spark now in 3 out of 4 cylinders, just can't get the 4th to work. I switched the wires and all the secondary solenoids work. Now I'm left wondering if it's the stator or brain box. At my wits end and I don't want to buy a whole new stator if it's the brain box."

"Well I got her running!! Tomo

"Well I got her running!! Tomorrow is tune-up day, going to have my mechanically gifted friend show me how to set the carbs. Boat goes like a bat outta-hell now. Have to get the speedo going to get a true reading of the speed, but I'm happy with what I have. Didn't get a single bite while fishing for sturgeon though, but at least I made it back to the dock :)"
