"Hi everyone,
I've Been reading posts on this forum so I thought I'd join and see if I could get some help. I recieved an older Starcraft with a 1993 40HP Merc on her which ran for three outings then died. While I was trying to figure out the problem, a friend gave me a 1984 75 Mariner and said if I can get it running it'd be $500 for the engine. I thought great deal and more HP since my boat is rated for a 85 HP engine. So 1 week later and reading my Seloc bible I finally got her in the water for her first test, which came to a miserable end. I think I have a lower end issue due to some loud clunks upon shifting but it's the lack of power that concerns me. I did a compression test and from cylinders 1 to 4 had 150, 150, 152 and 155. When I put it in gear it runs up to 2000 rpm then starts to fall off and then dies. I've read on here about the carbs, stator and or ignition problems. I'm not sure what to do next, I'm thinking carb rebuild?? Are these old engines worth fixing up? The older style outboards really appeal to me but I don't have a money tree as of yet so where do I draw the line and say enough is enough? I run tugs for a living but this is my first pleasure boat so I'm fumbling my way through this and any advice would be greatly appreciated."
