Mariner engine cooling stream

"I have a mariner outboard 1992. How long should it take after starting the engine cold for the water to stream out of the engine?

It takes my mariner at least a minute when cold, and about 30 seconds to a minute when warm. The stream seems strong when it finally comes out. Warm but not burning hot. Is this all normal? I already put it in the water and prefer not to change the pump. Last question what happens when your water pump dies completely? Does that destroy the engine, or am I just stranded in the water. Thanks. I appreciate your advice. Last time you saved me at least $400.00."

"Josh,
It has been my experie

"Josh,
It has been my experience with about 8 different Mercury models it can take from 30 seconds to a minute for water to come out of the "pee" hole. It just depends upon the model/year of the engine.

If you are getting a good stream that is not boiling hot then the water pump/impeller is working fine.

I always change my impeller and lower end oil at the start of each boating season. It is amazing the differences. Some impellers look like new, but other have parts missing

When the water pump dies you should shutdown the engine and call for a tow or have a backup/kicker engine. If your engine has a water pump and it failsit will destroy the head."
