"Hi,

I just bought a second

"Hi,

I just bought a second hand Haines Hunter with a Mariner 60 o/b motor. Having collected this today and being the first boat I have ever owned, I shot straight down to the water to give it a try out. All went well, caught a few crabs and decided to call it a day so we up anchored and headed for home. The motor was sounding really good but all of a sudden, it cut out.

I tried to start it again and eventually it fired but it was running very slowly.

As a young man I owned two stoke motor cycles and they were notorius for gumming up the plugs. Could this be the case here?

I know nothing about o/b motors and I am not even sure where I should check for gear oil.

I'm not sure how old the o/b is but any help would be greatly appreciated...."

"most problems are fuel relate

"most problems are fuel related, plugged carb jets. This is a big problem. If you have a 3 cyl, 3 carb engine, you really have 3 engines sharing the same crankshaft. If 1 of the carbs get clogged that section of the engine doesn't get fuel or OIL and burns up, toasting the engine. Since the engine can be junked by running like this, we say check the compression, check for spark, clean the carbs. Skipping one step can prove to be costly. You can use a timing light on each plug wire to check for spark. I'm guessing some crud in the tank plugged one carb. Change the waterpump if you haven't already, every 2 years"

"Thanks JB,

I ran the engin

"Thanks JB,

I ran the engine for about 20 Minuites like this (to get back to the Boat ramp. Could this have toasted my engine?"

"Compression test----spark tes

"Compression test----spark test----if they are good move on. The answer is yes, any damage will show in the compression test. You now know not to try and force the engine to run, it won't fix itself. It could be as easy as a bad spark plug, but my luck is not that good."

"Hey JB...

You were right!!

"Hey JB...

You were right!! I did a compression test Cyl 3 135psi Cyl 2 135psi Cyl 1 25psi. I called the Dealer this morning and explained it to the sales guy. He has taken the boat back, promised to fix the engine and told me (like you) to change the water pump every 2 years. I told him go ahead and clean the carby's as well.

Thank you so much for your advice. I'm sure I will have more questions as time goes on (as a novice boatie).

Frank"
