"whilst using my friends marin

"whilst using my friends mariner 60,2 stroke, 3cylinder (late 1980`s model, serial number not yet available)the impeller separated from the brass bush leading to the engine to overheat. previous to this i had noticed that it was running extreamly smokey leaving sooty deposits over the entire leg even to the point of the white propellor appearing to be black! The question is will it be safe to just replace the impeller and start her up or is there a posibility that further damage has been done or does it sound like there was a problem before it overheated?"

"all depends on how hot it got

"all depends on how hot it got, a compression test is in order to determin cyl damage. Smoke is normal for a 2 stroke, if its running poorly due to lack of routine maintenance (water pump) any thing could be wrong, hard to give advise. Change the pump after the compression test passes. 20 bucks for a pump every 2 years sure beats a new motor every 5 years"
