Time to troubleshoot the motor. Do you have a manual? are you going to do it yourself?

If either answer is no, we can guess all day what the trouble is and acomplish nothing.

If you are looking for a general answer it could be anything from a defective vent or pick-up at the gas tank, to issues with some major ignition components.

The light blue smoke is somewhat normal/expected - it is a 2 stroke so the exhaust contains burnt oil as well - depending on the severity and when it occurs can mean different things - from all is well, to running too lean....."

"THANK S FOR A QUICK REPLY,the smoke is very severe, like big clouds as you open it up,we have been told by friends who do bits of diy on there own engines, that it could be a reed block or the upper stater,my friend who is a moterbike machanic is going to do the job but this is his first attemt at a boat engine not much more to go on im afraid"

"Andy, lot's of smoke on a

"Andy, lot's of smoke on a four stroke usually means bad piston rings. On a two stroke it could be something as simple as too much oil in the gas or even a carb running a little too rich.

It is possible that you have some stuck reeds - it would explain the lack of power in the upper end, but reed problems are not overly common and it is typical that you will end up with a plugged up carb(s) long before the reeds stick on you.

Systematic troubleshooting is always the key and a decent manual always helps.

Your motor is a 1989 model, which makes it still relatively young. Alot of Mariners were made entirely by Yamaha, yours was a Mercury version. That means the powerhead and gears are Yamaha, but the ignition and carbs were standard Merc.

All in all these were very well built motors. Yours probably predates the oil injected models, but may have initially had an auto-blend system. If it is present that could well be the cause of your "blue smoke".

If it has been removed and you are mixing your gas you can use regular unleaded mixed at 50:1 with any TCW-3 rated Marine 2 cycle oil. I'm not particularly brand loyal and have used everything from Merc branded to Walmart's no name with good results..."

"hi graham thanks for another quick responce, yes we had a autoblend on it but took it off as a precaution just in case im gone try some quicksilver premium in it tomoz to see if that helps, then it is just down to a process of illimination like you said i have purchased a manual today to give to the mechanic so will keep you posted on the progress,im not desperate as we can fish off the rib but its a bit chilli this time of year lol cheers andy"
