Mariner 5hp - help please

I have an old Mariner 5hp and I have tried to track down the serial number on the various lists but cannot seem to find it as I would like to know the year it was manufactured:-
On the maker plate it says made in Japan for Mariner
The serial number is 682 CL352058
I believe I am right in saying it is air cooled but if anyone could confirm that I would appreciate it.
Also what would be the correct fuel to oil ratio?
Thanks for your help

That serial would make it a 1984 9.9 horse "C" model Yamaha built (for Merc) Mariner.

So, now we need to back up a bit here to figure out exactly what you have.

Does it have 1 or 2 cylinders?

I have just looked at the plate again and it has a small N in the bottom left corner which I believe is the year which confirms it has a 1984, does the 682 at the beginning of the serial number signify the power which would probably make it a 5hp?
Can you please advise on the fuel/oil ratio
Thank you

That trigraph at the beginning is the Yamaha model number.

The 5 horse was either a 661 or 6E3.

661's were copies of Yamaha's model 5BS built between 1973-80
6E3's were copies of the model 5C which began production in 1980.

Since it's a single cylinder, it's definately not a 9.9.

The 682 would equate to Yamaha's 1978 model 9.9B which was produced as the "c" model Mariner.

A 1984 Mariner 5 horse would have a serial starting 6E3, so don't know where your sticker came from but it does not apply to that motor...

Thanks for your help so far, I have to assume I have a 1984 (N on the plate) air cooled 5 hp two stroke - could you please tell me the ideal oil/fuel ratio for this?
Many thanks

You can mix at 50:1.

Personally, I would run two stroke oil that is meant for chainsaws/lawnmowers etc instead of TCW3 outboard oil.

An air cooled motor runs a little hotter than water cooled. Because of that TCW3 oil, which is designed to burn up at a lower temperature, may not give you all the protection to ensure a long engine life. So I would run the oil designed for air cooled engines...
