Mariner 50 shifting problems

"I have a Mariner 50 on my pontoon that has had shifting problems for years. When I first put it in the water every year it is fine, but after running for awhile or later in the year, I cannot get it into neutral or reverse from forward. I have had to two or three repair shops over the years and they say it is fine. I have replaced the control and the cables. I have had the lower unit taken apart and they say it looks perfect, any help on this annoying problem. The motor is in the water all of the summer time."

It sounds like a problem with the shift rods. Either the lower or upper rod is binding. It could be the linkage beneath the carbs also. If I knew the year I could be more specific. Some Mariners are the same as Mercs; earlier models were frequently Yamahas.
