"Hi Forumites,

I bought the above in the UK several years ago from ebay and only used it for the first time last year. I do not have a service manual or know anything about it I suspect it is a two stroke? Its serial number is 09657598, grey with orange decals.

Can someone tell me if its a two stroke and its year?

Most annoyingly it runs for a bit seems okay then dies, and is a pig to restart if at all?
Replaced the plug and filter cleaned out the fuel and replaced with new on a 50:1 ration with Yanmar oil. Still runs the same as before!

Any help most appriciated, as would love to take the kids out fishing at the weekend.

All the best from Scotland, many thanks in advance...

"Dale, that is a 1991, Mercury built Mariner.

You have the mix correct at 50:1.

I would suspect that you most probably have a clog in the carb which would be typical of a motor that has sat for a while unused.

Best to have the carb disassembled and cleaned out - there are two jets which can gum up on you and can only be cleaned while apart..."

"Hi Graham,

thank you very

"Hi Graham,

thank you very much indeed for your help, I did not want to and strip it down without an expert opinion first. Good to know that at least I've got the mixture correct. Is there any point in running a Redex type carb cleaner through it first or would that affect the engine?

All the best

"Dale, you can try any additiv

"Dale, you can try any additive/cleaner that is ok for a 2 stroke engine, but most times there is no "magic in a can" - but it certainly won't hurt.

I have found most "cleaners" are useful to help prevent gumming, but after the fact they do very little if anything to correct the problem - but give it a go, you might get lucky..."
