New member
hello everyone,

New guy here. Just inherited a old O/B from my father just in time for duck season but I have a Couple questions for you guys hoping someone can help me. I have a Mariner 4HP 2 stroke o/b. SN 4m 6e0 s 115243 made in japan.
1st question: Am I right that this is a 1989 motor?
2nd question: I have been trying to find an owners manual online for it. No luck so far. I did go to the Brunswick marine download centre and found the manuals but I can't figure out which one would be for this particular motor. So i guess what I'm asking is can anyone point me in the right direction? http://download.brunswick-marine.com/download/dosearch/@isnew/desc?mod=4&lang=EN&categories=OUTBOARD$
3rd question: I do believe it is a 50:1 fuel oil ration am i correct there? if so it seems to smoke a lot. Even for a 2 stroke. Any ideas?
4th question: Does anyone have a source on parts for these O/B?

Yes, it's a 1989 "built" model.

It was built by Yamaha for Mercury to sell as a Mariner.

The 6E0 is the designation which tells you that it's "mechanically identical" to a 1980 Yamaha Model 4AC outboard - so despite coming off the production line in 1989 it was 1980 technology (not saying that's a bad thing, but that's how they kept the pricetag down on the Yami built Mariners). Merc sold this model as a "4A" Mariner.

I never personally had any luck finding an "owners manual" for the Yami/Mariners - they were only "marketed" by Merc and the line was scrapped all together almost 25 years ago now. You would probably have to find (someone) who has posted one up on one of the file sharing websites if you are looking on-line. Alternately, you might find an original on Ebay. The Yami Mariners, in all horsepowers, were very popular in Australia and there is still a decent used market for them there today.

You can get a "repair manual" from Seloc's. They have both print and download versions for "1 and 2 cylinder Mariner Outboards - 1979 thru 1998" which would cover the mechanical end of your model.

Yes, it runs 50:1 gas/oil mix - if you are using regular "2 stroke oil" (such as used for lawnmowers etc) instead of TCW3 rated marine oil, that could explain some "extra smoke". If you are using TCW3 you may just not be used to the fact that 2 strokes are "smoky" compared to modern engines. Another potential issue is a missing/non-functional thermostat. Without the thermostat it may be running "cold" which also contributes to extra smoke.

As far as parts - just about everything that is still stocked is available through the place that sponsor's this website. You can see the parts lists here: http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mariner-outboard-parts/4a/6e0001011-and-up-m
