"Hi hope this works! i have a mariner 40hp twin cylinder, electric and pull start[ not that i have the strength to pull it], it has a charging systym. the engine has allways started no prob and ran sweet,i did not use the boat for aprox 6 weeks, went out to mooring triped the cut of switch, pumped up fuel, put choke on spun it over, the water pumped out of tube as should do, turned over fast as usual but woul not start. when i checked the plugs they were wet and had no spark!!! help lpease."

"see if that engine has a blac

"see if that engine has a black/yellow wire going to the powerpack, disconnect it, it grounds the ign system out. That will tell you if it is the switch, safety switch or tilt switch. ps the engine won't shut off if it fires, pull the choke. You need to state year/serial number if no bl/y wire"

"the ignition and kill switch

"the ignition and kill switch are on the remotes fed to the engine by large loom, which colour wire feeds the coils/spark plugs?"

"Graham is the local mariner nut, I mean expert. He knows these well. Some are yami's and some are merc's. The powerpack on a merc would have all the coil wires (green with stripes) hooked to it. It will also have a kill wire coming from the main harness going to the key, that one on the merc is black/yellow. When removed the ign is hot. You need to post a serial number or year so Graham can tell you what engine you have."

"If you need more help, go to the main merc page, find Graham Lamb's name, click on it for his email address. He be the man. I'll be in training tomorrow, I still know nothing today."

"Hi,
Last week I had to replace the starter solenoid now I have a similar no spark intermittent problem with a 98 Mariner 40hp. A couple of times It would not start after I trimmed the motor up for a while. but then it will work again after a little while. I've tested and there is no spark to start motor. The motor will start if I disconnect the ignition wire metioned above?
Any advice please ?"
