also the part im on about is attached to outboard in pic also any ideas of year this outboard is thanks craig

Hi Craig,
There is a number on the outboard with a number on it,it'll read 6E9 xxxxxx or 676 xxxxxx. What you have is a Yamaha built mariner.A carbon copy of Yamaha's older outboards, painted in Mariners colours.
The grooved shaft is,I think, the shift shaft and should match with a grooved shaft on the lower unit/gear box,in front of the water pump. That's the white block on the gear box.I can't see it in the pics. There should be a plastic guide in the recess where the shaft comes out the leg.
Put the engine controls in neutral, put the gear box in neutral, prop shaft rotates freely in both directions, push the two together, get someone to turn the flywheel clockwise while jiggling the gear box and it should slide in.If it doesn't work, try both in forward.Prop shaft rotates in one direction and ratchets in the other.

thanks mate will try that and ive got the plastic like a cover thats holded in wi 1 bolt and it clicks in both ways my propeller when i put it in forward gear the shaft slides in perfect but then try put it in reverse or nuetral without bolts in and it lifts it is that normal? if i bolty it down will it not bend the shaft or is it a case of bolt it down n does the shaft just lift n drop for different gears sorry to sound so dumb thanks craig

Ok my next bit of advice is the most important, get a manual.:D http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/seloc/mariner.html .They do ship manual to the UK [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Mariner Outboard Tune-up and Repair Manual 1977-89 2cyl is the one you need
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/Mariner/parts.html You'll see the list, most of the parts will be the same across the board. From 40A (above prop exhaust) to 40C (twin carb) (Autoblend). You'll see the diagram of the shift linkage.
http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...50000 (EL)/GEAR SHIFT LINKAGE/parts.html Which number part are we looking at?

hi there got the engine together fired up second pull but making a noise realyy loud from where propeller goes on and notice abit of play any ideas who will be able to replace it or where i can get pics on how to do it thanks in advance

There shouldn't be any play in the prop shaft. There may be a bend in the propshaft, bearings done in the carrier, gears loose. In North East England I'm not sure of outboard repair. Bill Hingham is in Brmingham. If you are mechanically minded you can do it yourself, but I recommend you get the manual. It may even be cheaper to buy a used gear box of ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/40HP-Yama...at_Engines_EngineParts_SM&hash=item2ebc919cfb http: There are a lot of breakers as well as Bill Hingham, www.outboardsparesunlimited.co.uk ,another in North Wales.
