That's a 1989 "C" model Mariner, built by Yamaha for Merc.

Merc still stocks many parts. Alternately, if you have access to a Yami dealer with older stock this model was mechanically identical to Yamaha's own model 40FE built between 1981 and 1983...

Yes, any 80 or 90 weight or 80/90 weight GL5 rated gear oil is perfect.

Most "marine" gear oil will be the 80/90.

But any with a GL5 rating, including regular automotive gear oil is acceptable.

The GL5 means that it is water resistant to the point that it won't expand and foam up if mixed with water (which could be really really bad for the seals in the lower unit).

If you do go with a Marine gear oil, regardless of brand, just DO NOT get a "Type C" oil which is specific to Electric shift OMC models.

Just buy Mercury gear lube. Premium is mineral based. High performance is synthetic blended and tends to last longer without burning.

It doesn't matter what year it is if you have the serial number. If you go to a Mercury dealer they will ask you for the serial number to look up parts in the merc system.
