Mariner 40C Carburetor question

Hi guys,

I took my carburetors off and under the main plate on top of the carburetors, there are a couple rubber gaskets and a very thin metal plate that goes under the gasket in the carburetors. The rubber gaskets look like they are cracking, so I would like to replace them. However, the very thin metal plate that goes below one of the gaskets has 2 little divots (they look like they are manufactured that way). So my main question is, does it matter how the divots are positioned? The Mariner manual I have does not mention their orientation in the carburetor, but I don't want to put it in wrong, if there is a wrong way. Does anyone know? Reference#26 on the following diagram: http://www.marineengine.com/parts/m...carb/6e9400231-thru-6e9423162---el/carburetor shows the part, but there is no reference to the divots in the illustrations. The motor has 2 carbs, and each plate in each carb has the same two divots. It also looks like each plate is slightly bent or curved (again, both look manufactured in this way). Any help would be great. Thank you! God loves you-Gene 1987 MARINER SANSHIN 40 ELPTO Model Number 7040737

You must have the same manual as the one I have, it doesn't say anything other than there should be three rubber plugs ( 2 large and one small). The exploded diagram shows the large one closest to the reed block side doesn't have a plate under it at all. No mention of how the two plates goes in though (1 under the large plug furthest away from the reed block side, 1 under the small plug). Maybe a Clymers manual has it specified, the Seloc one I have doesn't.

Anyone else have any ideas? Also, does anyone know if I put the rubber plug in first on accident, could that cause the motor to run too lean and blow a cylinder? Thank you!

Can you post some clear closeup pics of the three... two gaskets and plate? Also pics of the two faces they sandwich between? They may have something to do w/orientation but maybe not.

Sure thing. I won't be able to get to it until Friday, but once I do, I will upload the pictures. Thank you greatly for your help!

OK, got it back apart. Here are the indentations I was talking about (circled). I am not sure if they are just machined this way and the indentations serve no function ot not. I've looked here on line, other diagrams, and the Mariner owners manual, and there is no mention of indentations on these parts nor their function. Any ideas? The plate gets placed in the carburetor (circled) and the other carburetor's plate has indentations in a different spots (also circled). You can see by how nicely finished the indentations are that they are not dents or mistakes, it looks like something professionally made them. Looks like the dimples don't mean a thing...too random of a pattern to affect function. What does the gasket look like?

The gasket is actually called "packing" according to the parts schematic and the manual. I think it does just that, it packs the space between the metal plates and the plate that covers them on the top of the carb. They are circular, black rubber, and one of them can be seen on the picture on the right above. I replaced them because a couple of them were looking brittle as though they were deteriorating.
