Hi there I'm a novice boater and just purchased a small fairline 20 and can't find the year of this engine so I can get the correct parts if someonecould help me please?
Also it used to start fine with the key but my flywheel need replacing due to worn teeth. My starter motor probs needs replaced as the wee cog has some play so I think this has caused the flywheel ware.
The engine starts fine with pull start by sometimes it doesn't stop with the key so I need to pull choke out to flood it and stop the engine.(sometimes it stops with ignition key) any help is much appreciated thanks. sorry engine number 40ML 6E9 L 352885

You have a 1990 Yamaha built Mainer.Which is just an older Yamaha 40FM painted in Mariner colours.
I think you have a faulty ignition switch,so best to replace.

Like all engines,if properly looked after, they'll last. These are a particularly robust outboard,so I'm told,I don't have one myself, but these are known to be a very reliable outboard.
They ignition switch is a simple fix, desolder the old and solder in the new, making sure you take photos of where the wires should go.It should be a marine ignition switch with the same number of posts as the old.
If you are anyway electrically minded, you could chance it yourself.
