mariner 40 magnum...

I have a 40 hp magnum OC188149 with slight carb problem. I noticed that a small leak was coming from the fuel bowl. I took out the rubber gasket and found no tears or any bad spots on it so I flip it over and reinstalled it leak stopped. A small brass piece kinda fell out and not exactly sure how or where it goes. its called a fuel bowl baffle. Is it even really needed? but I'm not too sure if I put it back right. Because now I have a more significant leak when pumping up the blub.. fuel shoots out of the bowl vent. but not always a different times the blub firmed up nice and the motor fired right up. Am I in need of a carb. rebuild? another question...the wma-1b is stamped on the carb. are parts interchangable between other WMA- carbs?

Klag,

Yes you need to put that back in. We refer to it as a slosh tube or baffle and it sits only in one spot under the float with the carb upside down and off the motor The little tang is held in by the fuel bowl gasket as you found out. ,The easy explanation is it keeps the fuel from sloshing around in the bowl on cornering etc..

I would remove those and have them rebuilt. Are you sure those carbs are not 10's instead of a one looking at the parts list they came with a 7-13 model carb you should be able to swap parts with in those models. The earlier models had a smaller float bowl and did not have the enricher circuit and they really early models had a integral pump built on the side of them instead of the block off plate like you have.

here is a pic of the parts list in pdf. #6 is the part I assume fell out on you.

Thanks Dave for the quick response, and its in but am pretty sure it is not in right. i am going to do a total rebuild. is there any shop manuals for this particular motor....the clymer mariner 77-89 yr doesn't seem to be correct for some of the schematics of the carburetors are different than the one that is on my motor. I'm not likely going to have much confidence in the manual but the tune up specs should be ok I assume?

As far as the model of carb I'm not sure....but what is stamped clearly on the side is WMA and verticaly from The wma stamp on the left hand side is 1b not sure about any thing else since I have not taken these carbs out yet.

again thaks for the quick responce.

First off This is an easy motor to work on and have always been intimidated about digging in without any knowledge. through all the previous posts, I found plenty information about fuel problems and many seemed to be similar in nature to mine. This gave me confidence to do the work myself.....So what a great forum very active.

Secondly, I did pull off the carbs and fuel pump and only replaced the gaskets, since I had those and not the complete rebuild kits. I figured that these carburetors are easy enough to get off do the rebuild at a later date so I just replaced all gaskets on both carbs. The fuel bowl baffle was a snap and was very obvious on how it went back in.

Thanks again
