"David, that's a 1979 &#34

"David, that's a 1979 "B" model Mariner, built by Yamaha for Merc.

If was based entirely on an earlier 70's model Jet drive Yami.

If something is seized in the lower unit you can tear it all down and have a look.

Two pieces of advice with this motor. First, if you are going to proceed get a Seloc's manual for it - and second, don't invest alot of money into it.

The B models are kinda orphaned and not the same as the immensly popular C models. Parts are difficult to find in alot of cases, near impossible in others and can be quite expensive if you do find them.

It it turns out to be more than a simple fix, you may want to consider simply parting out the motor and selling what is still good on it to help finance another motor."

will another 40 hp lower unit

will another 40 hp lower unit match the "b" model I have looked at the bolt patterns on other 40's and they have the same bolt pattern

"Yes, most likely - the B mode

"Yes, most likely - the B model was a 40 powerhead with a jet drive in Yami's own model (30 horse jet). I suspect they simply used the lower off their own 40FM/40FE models to produce the "B" model Mariner.

That was definately the lower used on the "C" models.

Both the B and C models came out after Yami's own 40 horse - so probably a safe bet that they shared a lower unit - just can't say with 100 percent certainty..."
