"Hi, Me and a friend have just bought a Mariner 40HP on an Avon Searider. The engine is a Mariner 40hp and has been converted from tiller to remote control. It is ex RNLI and think its about 6yrs old.

The engine works fine on pull start and runs nicely but when we use the button on electric start it just ticks and the starter motor goes round very slowly. We have done the following checks:-

Battery - All fine and fully charged
Starter Motor - Removed it completely, engages fine and works as we tested it straight off the battery. We also ran jump leads from the battery direct to the starter motor when it was fitted and it did turn the engine over fine.

Could it be the solenoid? Am i right in thinking this is the small part that is clamped on to the starter motor with 3 or 4 wires coming from it?

Any help greatfully received. If I can give any more info, let me know.

Matt"

It could be the solenoid but first check all your connections. They must be shiny clean and tight. Also look for signs of corrosion around the base of the cable lugs. They can corrode inside where its not obvious.

"Hi, Checked all connections and lugs for corrosion and tightness. Still no joy. Would the Solenoid be the next thing to check? Thanks. Matt"

"Run a heavy jumper from the + side of the battery straight to the starter. If it works normally, replace the solenoid, if not replace the starter or have it rebuilt at your local auto electric shop."

"Hi, Thanks for the replies. Put a heavy jumper from battery to starter and that works fine.

The serial number for the engine is:-
6E9S110388W and its a Mariner 40EM.

If anyone has the part number for the spare and any suggestions for a cheap supplier - id be really greatfull.

Thanks again for the replies.

Run 12 volts from battery to the small terminal on the solenoid -- the one that does not go to earth as they say overseas.

"Matt, the Merc part number for the solenoid is 97685T - but expensive from Merc. I would try ebay for an aftermarket equivalent or possibly a Yamaha dealer - same parts since your motor is really a Yamaha, but their prices are usually alot better."

"Proble all sorted now guys. Thanks very much for all the help and advice. It turns out it was the battery isolator switch at fault. It would let enough current through for the VHF and CD player to power up but not enough for the engine to fire. Once again, thanks very much. Matt"
