Mariner 2007 15hp 4 Stroke Gear Selection Problems

I need help with a gear selection problem on a 2007 Mariner 4 stroke 15hp. The Quicksilver remote ( also new 2007 with new cables ) seems really stiff to move from neutral either forward or backwards, also the engine often gets stuck in reverse and eventually after applying huge amounts of pressure to the remote the cable comes off ! The engine has been in the repair shop and they say it changes fine and I can get it to go in and out of gear if I put a socket on the end of the selector bar through the case
The cables run very freely when I remove them from the engine; I’ve creased everything, backed off the hold down mechanism as far as I dare. It must be something to do with the linkage but it’s such a simple arrangement and all moves very freely I can’t think what !
Any suggestions of what to try next would be great appreciated because fresh out of ideas !

Should be still under warranty, correct?

Take it back to the shop and YOU show them what it's doing. If they are having no issues it is possible that you are doing something wrong (although I can't think of what it may be).

This is a very new engine and unless it has been significantly mistreated or neglected you should not have issues at this point with seized components.
