Mariner 2 HP impeller replacement

"I have a Mariner 2, about 1990, and have been unable to remove the drive shaft from the lower unit and water pump. It appears that the shaft should pull out, but I haven't been able to get it loose.

Can someone confirm that the shaft should be pulled from the lower unit.

Not ususally! (It's attached to the pinion gear.) Suggest you spring for a manual and see how it should be done. This site sells them.
