Mariner 1999 3.3 HP outboard

I have just purchsed a 1999 Mariner 3.3 HP outboard motor and it is missing a part on the shaft unit called a "grommet". Do I need this grommet? Will water entering this area be a problem?

Assume you are talking about the grommet that goes on the lower cowl where the shift shaft enters (under the hood).

If so it's designed to keep water from splashing up in the front of the powerhead which could ultimately get sucked into the carb (not a good thing).

Having said that I don't think any of my 3 Mercs have the grommet still in place and have never had an issue.

But now that I have said it I will no doubt hit a rogue wave and drown my carb :)

The drive shaft housing grommet keeps debris from entering the housing. You need it, but it isn't a critical thing. IE: You lose it, you replace it first chance you get, but you don't blow a trip just because you discover its missing.

next chance you get put one in dont want any water in there! not to big of an issue though

Hmmmm....thanks for the answers. It is the grommet on the drive shaft housing. Tohatsu_Guru says "to keep debris out", nothing about water out. Is water okay?
omc_10 says "no water in there". I'll add a gromment as soon as I can, but if water in there will cause a problem, I'll certainly not do water activities 'til then. Thanks, y'all.

Outboards normally have water in the housing. In fact it's part of their design as it reduices noise so............Water is a good thing, not a bad thing.

one wave you can drown your carb is water gets in there and then you can get water into the cylinder... rather safe then sorrry...

I'm puzzled...What does the grommet on the leg have to do with water getting into the carburetor or an engine cylinder?

I think there was some initial confusion as to the location of the grommet - I assumed that the grommet in question was near the top of the shift shaft where it enters the lower cowl (common on a number of models), not down on the front of the gearcase...
