"How you going guys, just stumbled across this pretty active forum so i thought id give it a shot.

the gear housing around the propeller on my ~1989 Mariner 55Hp has cracked, and ive been trying to locate a replacement. Do you guys know anywhere where i'd be able to located one? maybe an online store? Ive rung around most of the outboard wreckers in my state and nobody has anything.




Also ive considered repairing the damage. As far as i understand the housing is cast iron, so i would require a professional to weld it, but id be more than capable of the cleaning + dismantling part. I would just have to know what seals and such i could need and how exactly it should be sealed etc.

"How bad is the crack? Did you hit something hard or is a stress fracture? Is there water getting into the gearbox? Cast metal is a pain to Weld and you need a special type of weld ($$$$$$) especially with the thinner casts as the magnesium level in the cast is normally higher therefore when subjected to extreme heat like welding, the magnesium reacts with tiny explosions causing more damage. I had a similar thing a few years back with a 70hp merc and a bloke put me on to a product called Q-Bond it is a 2 part system. One bottle contains a powder bonding substance and the other part is a liquid. You lay the powder over / into the crack and add the liquid and it creates a chemical reaction (it smells a bit and smokes a little bit) The chemical bond is apparently as strong as steel, you can sand it grind it shape it etc. It is heat resistant, water resistant etc.. you can get it from REPCO for about $35 Aus. I also used it on a dirt bike exhaust flange on very light cast alloy japanese head and it worked well it bonded a whole broken section back on that was constantly subjected to heat and vibration and it never came off."

"Adem, There may be several model of motors and years that share a lower unit. You can start by checking part numbers and prop applications and maybe come up with a range. For example, the lower units for inline 4 and 6 cylinder Mercs from 80HP-150HP from the years 1970-1988 or so interchange. They may have some gear ratio differences, but you can ususlly overcome these with a prop change."

"My father actually sells Q-Bond at work so getting some of that, i knew it was strong, just didn't think it would work for what i need it for. Here are a few images so you can see the extent of the damage.

We haven't hit anything, its just appeared on its own because the boat has been sitting outside for 2 years or so now without use. Also, the damage hasn't broken into where the oil and such is.

"Looking at the images you sent it appears much worse than you first described! Has this engine had extended salt water use? Does it still have an anode on the leg? Remember the exhaust on these engine goes through the leg and out the prop as does the expelled water that has circulated through the engine. it is more than likely the salty corrosion has swollen the metal and seized around the prop shaft and seals whilst it was sitting for 2 years and when you have either spun the prop or started the engine and put it into gear the weakest point being the corroded cast has just broken off. See picture, http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/9893/2901081149customjy1.jpg" it clearly shows corrosion on the peice you are holding that matches the prop shaft internals. i would suggest also checking the condition of the inner water jackets of the engine and definately put a new kit and impeller through the water pump assembly.
