Mariner 1986 45 hp

Hi Gurus,

On a recent fishing trip our 1986 Mariner 45 cut out on us and took 10 minutes to restart. When we tried to start the engine later to flush it, it simply wouldn't. There is plenty of fuel, I have replaced the plugs and the battery has plenty of juice in it. If i try to start it, the starter motor runs but the engine won't fire. The engine was oil injected but that was disconnected some years back and now we premix 50:1. I read in one of the other threads about guys checking that the plugs are sparking. Is this done by removing the spark plug connector and trying to start the engine? Furthermore, i noticed a small dark patch of oil below the engine but some of the threads say that its not worth worrying about. Any ideas? the fuel filter was fill, possible blockage?

replies much appreciated
Thanks
Jake

Re: Mariner 45hp

The patch of oil is no problem. Pull the plugs, re-attach the wires and ground the plug body to the block, then wheel her over. All of the plugs should spark. If not...

Re: Mariner 45hp

You need to check for spark, which I bet you do not have. The only two things that will cause no spark is bad Stator or S/W box.
I would bet you stator is bad. To test you need a DVA, which is Diret Volt Adper to be but on you volt meter or you can get a meter made by Mercury with DVA build in.... Or see if some one has DMT 2000 meter, it has all what you need
