Hi all,
I am a complete novice where outboards are concerned, but the cost of leaving the engine in for service is starting to get silly!
I read chassis numbers for parts with my job, but cannot make head nor tail of age and/or significance of the letters contained in the i/d number, so if anyone can shed any light on this for me it would be greatlly appreciated.
W 15M 6840 S 098292.
Not expecting miracles, but any help would be good.

That is a 1991, Yamaha built (for Merc) "C" model Mariner.

The actual model/serial would be 684B-098292 (or just 684-098292 on Merc parts lists which will show it as a model 15C) - and many parts are available from a Merc dealer.

The 684B part is actually the Yamaha engine code. This model is a carbon copy of Yamaha's own model 15B (circa 1978) - so if you have access to a Yami dealer with old parts, telling them you have 1978/15B will lead them to what you are after as well...

Haventaclue, you are a gent, thanks. Floodmarine it is, thanks again.
Although I salmon fish around Sion Mills, but not at the minute because of no rain for weeks now
