"Hey All,

I need some ideas

"Hey All,

I need some ideas. I went out today and for the first time in the 2 yrs I've had it, the motor was very tough to start and wouldn't idle well.

In order to get it started and keep it running, I had to turn the idle speed way up. Once running, it ran great at high speed, but continued to run rough down low.

I pulled one plug out and it looked pretty fouled. The plan for the week is to:

-regap plugs
-try new plugs
-check fuel filter (gas has been sitting for a month or so)
-inpsect plug wires

Any other ideas or suggestions?"

"Chris, you have a decent list

"Chris, you have a decent list going there. Also check the fuel tank for crud - especially the fuel pick-up.

And try some fresh gas. Gas can get old in as little as a couple of weeks now.

If none of that cures your problem I would suspect that you have a gummed low speed carb jet."

"Thanks Graham,

I had a sim

"Thanks Graham,

I had a similar thought while driving to work this morning.

A question - if something in the fuel chain is gummed up, do you (or anyone else) have any good ideas to clean it out? I am looking for somehting chemical based if possible.

The boat is sitting on her mooring and I don't want to do any major surgery on the water for the fear of dropping parts into the Atlantic. I need to get the motor at least semi-running for the 3 hour trip to the storage yard in a couple fo weeks. At that point I can clean and/or rebuild anything I need to.

Thanks!"

"Cris, there really is no magi

"Cris, there really is no magic in a can, however, a bit of fuel stablizer and there is a fuel conditioner (various brands) for 2 cycle engines.

The stablizer should help prevent any further gum problems and the conditioner (at least according to the labels) is supposed to help remove gum and varnish etc.

I use both (no name brands from local auto parts store) as preventatives - but may help you out enough to get your one last trip done..."
