"Scotty, there were 3 different versions of the Mariner Magnum (all Mercury built models).

The Magnum 1 was based on Merc's 2.0 Litre block
The Magnum 2 the 2.4 litre block and
The Mag 3, the 2.5 litre block.

The Mag 3 (equivalent of Mercs XR6) was the best model to produce the 150 horses and be kind to the engine itself.

The 2.0's are one of my favourite Merc motors, but better suited to the 135 model.

The 2.4's were kinda orphaned by Merc (somebody didn't like the design I guess).

However, all models had solid ignition systems, good carbs and were generally well built motors.

Post the serial and we can figure out which model you have..."

"Actually, I was wrong... These were horrible motors, but fortunately I'm a Merc authorized disposal center - you can send me the motor, freight prepaid of course, and I'll take care of it for you

I’m looking at getting a 19’ basscat with a 96 Mariner magnum 2 150 compression is good (117-120) the current owner says that it will run fine on a water hose but when you put it in the lake it won’t plane out i understand that those engines are oil injected and he said that he quit filling up the tank and started mixing his own oil could this be a problem. And he has rebuilt all three carbs himself and I don’t think he really has any idea of how to adjust them( he’s not very mechanically inclined).could someone give me some pointers I’m really looking for second opinions.

I had the same problem with my 1988 Mariner Magnum II 150. I brought it to the shop to get it checked out, the compression was great and they said that they ran and adjusted the hoses, and fixed a loose wire they think was grounding it. It runs great now. Think it might have been a loose wire triggering the enricher solenoid.
