"Hi from Ireland,

Bought Quicksilver 640 Pilothouse and Mariner 115 HP efi new last year.
Engine has had 10 hour service and there is only 53 hours on engine and have done 340 Nmiles.
When I was out yesterday the engine lost power and each time I tried to push it a small warning light came on the console.
I had to limp home at 3000 revs about 6 knots.
I know absolutely nothing about engines and will be asking the people I bought from for help but hope somebody on here can give me some advise on what to check.

"Patrick, I will assume this is a 4 stroke model??
On a model as new as yours the "guardian system" will restrict the rpms to 3000 if it detects one of a few conditions.

If all you are getting is the warning light without a horn going off as well, it could be caused by a blown voltage regulator (which is producing more than 16 volts).

If you are getting a horn (alarm) as well, that would be a "detected" overheat (real or just a toasted sensor) OR low oil pressure detected at the oil pressure switch...

You didn't mention getting a horn as well, so my first check would be the voltage regulator - a multi-meter check will tell you quickly if it's throwing more than 16 volts - and would be the "most likely" suspect for a problem of all the conditions mentioned on a motor this new..."
