"I have a 1991 Mariner 100 on

"I have a 1991 Mariner 100 on my houseboat that seems to be draining the battery. The battery was dead a few weeks ago so I connected the motor to my deepcycle batteries used to power the 12v circuits, motor started and ran fine all wekend. The next weekend those batteries were dead. I stuck in another battery and everything was fine when I left sunday but after setting all week the battery was dead saturday.I now keep the motor disconnected from the batteries when not in use and have no battery problems so I have isolated the problem to the motor. An interesting note that may be coincidence only is my tach quit working about the same time the battery draining issue arose. Any help greatly appreciated."

"The sending wire for the tach

"The sending wire for the tach is in the charging circuit also. This is the grey wire that comes out of the regulator. It could be a bad stator, regulator, or both.

Since you say it drains the battery even when the engine is not running, I would say the regulator is definitely bad. Check the resistance on the two yellow wires coming from the stator. There should be a terminable block where you can do this easily. While the wires are disconnected, start the engine and check the output at these wires also."
