Marine White Gas

As a youngster, we to the gas station and get marine white gas for the old Sea King 12 horse. It was kept in cube type above ground box behind the station and had a had operated metering pump. This was up until the mid '60's

What was this gas and what made it special for the period engines?

Are the older engines OK by running on common unleaded?

Marine white gas = Unleaded gas.-----------------The 60's was a different time and the term for unleaded was " white gas "
