"Is there such a beast? I'm looking at a Performer 2-O (non-EGR) Intake and 1410 Edelbrock to top off the two 454 long blocks, but came across a post claiming there is a structural difference between marine and automotive. I've seen some intakes marketed as "Marine", but it looks like they are designed for race applications well above the RPM range I'm looking at.

Also would be a switch from cast iron to cast aluminum, but converting to fresh water cooled at the same time. Is this something to worry about?"

"no structural differences that I've ever seen. As you noticed, most of the differences are 'created' by marketing departments.

The aluminum shouldn't be an issue. I'm sure DD has these and will share his findings.

I'd reconsider getting the 1409's vs the '10's. Unless you are grossly underpropped, you don't spin the engine enough to justify their capacity."

We were discussing vaccuum at WOT at one point, I really don't remember but the end result on my 454's with 1409s is that THEY are alomst too big in CFM but do work great

"Edlebrock used to sell a Marine version of the Performer. It was irridited inside and out. Make sure you use a good anti-freeze and/or anti corrosion additive. I noticed on a teardown that I sustained quite a bit of pitting on the sealing surfaces. Could be the Ultra-copper or could be a lack of anti-corrosive additive, not sure. They claim ultra copper does not corrode aluminum, but I do know metallic copper will. Another vote for the 1409's."

"Whoa! Marine intakes are often different. The good ones have a copper coating where the raw water goes. Also, you can't use an aluminum intake in a raw water cooled motor! The electrolysis would eat it up in short order. FWC only!

The difference would be for raw water cooled engines. The coolant cross over ports would be bronze lined as to prevent corrosion issues.
If you are installed a Closed Cooling system, the automotive aluminum intake is a non issue.

Your issues will be a previously raw water cooled engine block being now converted to the closed system. Any dislodged rust scale debris may (I say MAY) create issues with the E/G side of the tube bundle (of which is non-accessible to average Joe)
Also PH balance for the first several hours of run time.

The dual plane manifold is a better choice for marine use, IMO. I believe that the Performer for the BB is also dual plane! Yes/No?

Thanks Guys. I ran the calculations and the 1409 seems to be a better match. Why did Crusader put the 750CFM 4MV on the 454's?

The 4mv was all that GM could offer on a 'complete' deal. because they were supplied "from within" they made a better deal from the corporate point that any outsourced carb.

BTW, those q-jets have a MAX rated flow of 750 CFM. With the air valve design, properly set up, the carb only supplies the air that the engine requires up to that max value. I haven't seen a marine BBC that it couldn't supply (except for a blown hydro boat)."
