Marine fuel better

Is the higher priced marine fuel sold at gas docks actually a higher grade fuel for marine engines or just more taxes added on.I believe their add claims 5 percent better fuel economy? I've noticed a lot of guys transporting fuel from the local gas stations and was wondering if they are really saving any money by doing so.My local Crusader dealer advised marine fuel only in my new motor.Any thoughts?

"There is no such thing as marine fuel. And there is no road tax on fuel sold at the dock. The difference in price is ... I don't know, greed maybe?

By the way your new Crusader is meant to run on regular 86 octane fuel. Higher octane fuel confuses the computer and causes the timing to advance too far and engage the knock sensor. Consult your owners manual for details."

"Most marine gas is 89 octane,

"Most marine gas is 89 octane, so you have to compare it with 89 octane auto gas.

The marine gas tax is supposed to go for boating improvements, but...

Jeff

PS: Paid $3.69 last time we gassed up."

"The state tax situation is different by state. MD charges their motor fuel tax and supposedly uses it for boating related projects. VA, for example ($0.17 per gal) gets charged but you can apply for it back by sending in receipts.

Never heard of an issue related to using fuel with Octane ratings higher than standard 89. The 89 octane fuel you buy at the pump should be the same as road pump fuel.

Greed? Gas stations make between 4 and 17 cents a gallon at high volumes. Marina's have to ammortize their infrastructure, fixed cost, inventory holding costs and profit over far fewer gallons... thus i can understand why margins need to be higher. Basic business... not greed."

Add to that the limited time of operation - 50%-75% of the year...and insurance and that's the biggest cost drivers.

"My marina didnt even fill their tank this year. He said it wasnt worth it to get a full tank at the price this spring when he thought the price of gas would fall anyway. First fillup in the water, 4.50 p/g, last fillup, 3.75. So if it was just pure greed, everyone would be doing it."

"I have two marina fuel docks

"I have two marina fuel docks near me. One adds Valvetec, the other managed to hold off ethanol until just last month. So, yes, the may be some difference. May or may not be worth the $$, however."

That explains the 10-15% higher rate which is acceptable. How do you explain the 40% difference, especially in Fl. where they boat all year long and boaters buy hundreds of gallons, or more, per fill-up?"

"Supply and demand my friend.

"Supply and demand my friend. If someone operating a gas dock could grab all the business by under cutting the others and still make money, don't you think they would?

Road fuel is typically used as a loss leader to drive store traffic. A fuel dock typically lacks the real margin contributors that a gas station typically has - C store and repairs. Thus a gas dock has to make money on the fuel alone. I don't like paying $4.40 for diesel any more than you but I can think of plenty of economic explanations."

"I don't know where you bo

"I don't know where you boat but every fuel dock I know of is stuck in a marina. I don't see any of them hat have to make money on fuel alone. Yes, there are several economic reasons and one of them is greed."

"Perhaps "greed" might

"Perhaps "greed" might be expressed in capitalist terms as "the profit motive". Supply and demand, Rick. Capitalism is still with us... at least until January 20th."

And that's fine with me, but let's call a spade a spade.

And God help us on Jan. 20 th. The last handsome young politician to get the masses this excited about spreading the wealth around was Castro. Now there's no wealth to spread around and people will risk their life to get out."

We paid $3.07 here at Brownsville marina: http://www.portofbrownsville.org/ last weekend.

It is $4.07 just 7 miles away at Poulsbo: http://www.poulsbo.net/portofpoulsbo/ .

One marina has a small fuel tank and high turnover. Other marina has a large fuel tank and low turnover due to slower summer traffic this year. Therefore they are stuck with fuel they bought 2-3 months ago.

Silent Majority - good one. Helped Nixon. 18-21 year olds can vote now and they will help outnumber the "Silents" now. <font color=""0000ff"">IMHO</font>"

"What about Valvetec? Is it worth the extra $ ? Here in the Florida Panhandle, gas at a marina without Valvetec was 3.87 on Oct 3. The marina next to it with Valvetec was 4.47."

The only problem with that is...they never show up
