Marine Engine Diagnostics Interpretation

I am looking to purchase a used 2000, 40 HP Mercury four stroke motor. The owner has provided me with a Marine Engine Diagnostics report from his mechanic. The report provides a lot of data, but I don't know if I am interpreting it correctly. Could somebody please be so kind as to take a look at the attached report and tell me if this is a good engine to purchase?

Chris

After a quick look at the report, you have about 3 entries for every item in different measurement scales.

The ones I find most interesting are on page 3. The run times in different RPM ranges and the the low oil pressure failure alarm. And the fact that it has been over revved at for at least 6 minutes (above 6000) and probably half of the 5000-6000 time (5350 minutes) assuming the rev limit should be around 5500 rpm.

What you do with over rev I don't know. The fact that the motor has at least 2600 hrs of run time is another interesting piece of information.

The piece of information that is missing is the compression values for the motor cylinders, giving you a gauge of the level of maintenance and the remaining life.

Being that it is 9 years old it has been run about 300 hrs/year. Depending on where you are at, that could be a little or a lot.

If it was on a boat from Minnesota, I would tell you it was high hours and due for a rebuild. If it was on a working boat from the coast of Maine that could be a different story.

Depending on the price it could be a good deal and worth some risk. Fish On....
