"I have a motor that I want to be knowledgable about. If there's a problem I want to be able to fix it. Now, I've seen the prices of these manuals, and it can be pricey, but its obviously smart money. What's the best way to approch this? A service manual seems to be a no brainer, but does this include part #'s? What does a fisherman need to keep the boat ready for the water, without breaking the bank?"

"One of the aftermarket manuals (such as Seloc) is good for general maint/service and can be picked up for 30 bucks or so. And although the service manuals are somewhat higher priced, they are very model specific. Neither one generally includes part numbers (there are parts manuals for a few more bucks that do that for you)....

Even if you are looking at 50 or 60 bucks, just stop by the marine dealer and price out a new motor - then the cost of the manual won't look so bad

"I'm sure the marine repair man makes a pretty good living here on Lake Saint Clair, as do they anywhere. It's not the money, I dont mind spending for something I need, do i "need" the owners manual? Can i get buy with the service manual and a parts manual? Why is it that I cant go to a place and say I need a lower end seal kit for a '72 evinrude MOD.#9222M 9.5 hp motor?? Seems to be easy enough to me. Why is it that i need to know every part #? I just dont want to have something I really dont need. If i go to a dealer do i need the part number? I think that would be their job, no? I'm all for knowledge, and knowing what makes things tic, Or, is it so i cant find these parts easier and/or cheaper on the net?"
