"I tried posting this in the general forum but had no response.I have a dual helm setup with manual hydraulic steering. I had recently drained the system as the oil was really old, and refilled it with fresh oil. I filled it with the teleflex kit and per their instructions. When I turn either wheel now, it turns very hard in either direction and the hydraulic ram at the transom of the boat makes a groaning noise. I thought it may have been my outdrives hanging up, so I disconnected the linkage arm. Even with the ram unhooked from the outdrives, it's still very hard to steer and still makes a groaning noise. Can air in the ram cause this? I don't have any bleeder t-fittings on my boat, it's older. Any other ideas?"

"Hydraulic steering is one of the best systems, in my opinion.
The bleed fittings should be at the cylinder at the base and stem end connections.

Air may cause the cylinder to do what you describe, but once purged, this should stop! IMO, you will need to purge the system of air.
If dual helm, you may have the "R" port (Return line).
There is a proper procedure for this.
