"I've got a 1978 Tiara 250

"I've got a 1978 Tiara 2500 with dual stations. I'm having problems with the below deck helm. It will turn the out drives starboard, but when I turn the wheel to port, I get nothing, the wheel just spins and spins. Sometimes if I am turning to starboard I can quickly "jerk" it to port and it will "catch" and then the out drives will turn to port. Also, if I go up to the flybridge and turn that wheel back and forth, the below deck helm will work fine for a while. I have a 3 line system, with the third line linking the two helms together. I don't know if I have air in the system or a dirty check valve. But I don't know how to bleed the system either. Does anyone know if I can still get parts for this older helm, or if the problem could be simple? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks"

I would start with filling and purging the system. You don't mention the brand of your system but most have on-line manuals which will walk you hrough the process of bleeding the air out.

"TRY going to www.seatechmarineproducts.com they have PDF manuals that you can download for the SeaStar Steering Systems. It can be as simple as clogged ports, valves or dirty lines or possible bad seals. Nevertheless, I believe you will find a section for Troubleshooting.
