Manifold torque specs advice...

Almostnormal

Hi Guys,

I just bought a boat with a 1988 360 Chrysler and am replacing the 21 year old center rise manifolds and risers (and adapter pieces) . Can anyone give me the torque spec page or tell me the torque for the:

*Manifold to head Pattern and torque

* adapter to manifold torque

* adapter to elbow torque

I am ordering the manual but have the parts in hand and would like to get going sooner. Thanks...Mike

If the threads are not clean on the bolts or the heads, and if the threads are not properly luricated, your torque wrench will "lie" to you, the bolts will not be tight enough, and the gaskets will leak.

Thanks for the replies,

I have new bolts and will chase and clean the head threads. What do you recommend to use for lubricant? I have two different types of three piece gaskets. Green Interface CMP-4000 and the black ones that came with the manifolds, see pics. best choice?? or 1 piece?

I have been looking back over posts and see a preference for one piece exhaust to head gaskets.
Any brand and part number that works best the head is not perfect but usable, i see 17450 is the chrysler number how about a Felpro number?

So if the threads are all clean and lubricated is there a recomended torque, or do I tighten them down heat it up and retighten?? Thanks

Mike Assembly lube??

Use a good anti-seize on the threads.

On the gaskets, place them on the manifold and see if the ports and gaskets match. (Some gaskets sets are for auto heads with much larger ports. Use these and they will leak.) I use gaskets made exclusively for the earlier, Mopar 273 cube V-8s that had smaller ports. The 318/ 360 auto gaskets won't work.

Always use one piece if you can get them (and they are okay, as explained above). Those (expletive deleted) three piece gaskets are a nightmare to get right on the ends--they can go on at least 157 different ways, only one of which is correct! I'll never, ever use 'em again!

I got the 3 piece from osco and I foresee yet another bear of a task in the doghouse!

Anti sieze? I thought we need a sealer on the 2 end threads/bolts because of the cooling passage,What do you think about JB weld the stainless studs in the head

Or is that something a redneck mechanic would do??!!

JB weld worked great on the Expanson tank repair

Here is how it shook out...i dumped the three piece gasket set that came with the manifolds also a set from another source(thanks FJ). I tried a quality local shop no luck, so back to Hayward and Vic Hubbards Speed and Marine. Steve went the extra mile and we narrowed it down to a set of Remflex solid graphite 50%crush gaskets Model # RF6003

The description is: "Mopar V8 318-360 ('68-'92)Header Applications 1-1/16' x 1-25/32' square end ports 2/set"

These gaskets actually are the proper shape with a divider between the center ports and all the ports are unobstructed. I used the same brand on my 351W three years ago when i repowered and added SS exhaust. These gaskets will seal most imperfections and are good to 3000 degrees. Just a fools game chasing around to three stores just go to the pros thanks Steve!!

Mike

oh yeah the last rear studs are through but the ends are studs so seal 'em. the studs make the installation a breeze with a 1 piece gasket to hang on the end studs slide on, cake.

I hope you checked those gaskets with the ports on the head, to be sure the holes in them are not too large.
