Mallory Electronic Distributor Upgrade

I have an 87 Searay 300 DA. The previous owner put in Automotive distributors and took out the ignition modules from Mercruiser and cut the original harness. In researching the replacement parts, it seems more cost effective to upgrade to Marine application Mallory Electronic Distributors with the ignition module contained within the distributor. I really did not want to spend the $$$$, but my mechanic tells me that my insurance would be void if i did not have marine parts if i ever had an incident. Seems fair to me knowing how insurance companies are.

Your thoughts? Anyone done this? What is the part # for my application?

Mercruiser 5.7 Alpha 1987

Thanks in advance

As far as part numbers go

You have a computer......

you have internet access..........

type in google "MSD" and go to there web site and order there Marine replacement unit.

I have used there msd 6a (something) marine ignition. Works fine and it comes with a complete advance spring set to customize the timing adavnce.

Your mechanic's point has been proven many times over.

Mallory, MSD, Delco.....many choices to be had. Ask your mechanic what's easily serviced in your area and factor that into your selection. As long as you go breakerless, they are all fairly dependable. the only other 'option' to consider is the advance mechanism. Some are happy with a programmed curve in the module and some desire the ability to tune the curve to the needs of the engine.
